building + constructing
The Protestant School Berlin-Mitte (ESBM) allowed for architects, school and afterschool teachers, children and their parents to together devise the curriculum of 10 weeks.
The project building + constructing as a central theme connected all the teaching content across different subjects and ages, thereby bringing a touch of reality to school life.
After-school care also participated: the children visited architects’ offices and various workshops in the afternoons and interviewed experts on site. Concluding during project week, themes chosen by the classes were intensified, such as “bridges”, playgrounds”, “flexible building elements”, “animals as builders”, and building a “house – here and elsewhere”. The corresponding programme was developed by the architects in close cooperation with the teachers and pupils. Parents played an active role in the realisation of the project.
Outcomes & evaluation:
The project building + constructing, as initiated by the architects, encouraged the pupils and the different subject teachers to a more interdisciplinary approach. The interactive process was a key part of the concept and motivated all participants from the beginning.
