CULTURAL ASSOCIATION C3
Public city deals with problems of Ljubljana’s youth. Since their birth (app. 15-20 years ago), the society underwent dramatic changes that resulted in physical transformation of the city structure. Ljubljana is characterized by a generation of descendants from other cultures. New relationships and creative potentials of the young living in the city are the starting point of the project.
The project began by examining the teens’ relationship with the city, the level of accessibility and the use of space. Together, a team of teenagers, architects, artists and researchers analysed the urban space in Zalog, which contributed to the making of a documentary that deals with the problematic way the youth deal with space. The analysis, the creative possibilities and the documentary were the first part of the project, which was presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana to invite the public to cooperate. Also, there were several interviews and texts in local newspapers, radio and television with the purpose to educate the general public on the topic. Its goal was to include a multitude of different audiences, which in turn helped to increase the awareness of the discussed urban topic. In the future, the project will take place on a local level as well as in a larger context. On the local level, the project will include the young in designing the local sport-field and its sitting area. It is designed as cooperation between the young and the selected experts, who will help them in building and selecting materials. The project is designed to use recycled waste material. The project, reusing materials, thus stimulates a larger sense of responsibility to the environment. It turns from a consumer society to a society that has a higher awareness of the spatial, ethical and ecological aspects of our environment. The experience and knowledge from the project and the reflection on the city’s workings and possibilities will be published in a textbook available to educational institutions and general public.
Public city builds the communication between various users of space and overcomes preconceptions of different generations - who they are and who we are - and at the same time encourages the teens to find possibilities to participate in creating their space. It is a collaboration between KUD C3 (artists, architects and researchers), Neighbourhood Youth Centre Zalog (ČAMAC) and STEALTH.unlimited (Ana Džokić, Marc Neelen).
The goal of the project is to include young people in the design of a new public city. Working with the Youth Neighbourhood Center, we analysed what the needs of teenagers are. Our discoveries and the documentary were presented at the Museum of Modern Arts in Ljubljana. Later, teenagers together with architects started on the renovation of the sportfield using recycled material. Working with the young in the period of a year we succeeded to start a new form of communication about space, its creative possibilities and their involvement.
