Climate detectives …investigating their schools…
Guided by an architect/energy consultant pupils of grades 3 to 11 and their teachers explore their individual behaviour concerning energetic efficiency and especially the energetic quality of their schools buildings. Different types of worksheets give information about technical terms and coherences of sustainability. The pupils check light, air, heat energy, material and construction of the school buildings and evaluate the influence of those components on comfort and energy budget. The “older” students calculate
the heating requirements of the classroom, compare the results to relevant parameters (CO2 emissions, equivalent oil consumption etc) and run different experiments with professional measuring instruments (thermal imaging camera; CO2 meter etc). Finally the pupils evaluate their school.
Schools participating in this programme will not be charged. The involved architects will be paid by the Bayerische Architektenkammer which also will supply the measuring instruments. Eventually students will obtain a climate diploma.

Outcomes & evaluation:
Climate detectives 3rd–7th grade: analysis of the energy efficiency of the school buildings and the individual behaviour; Climate certificate for their respective schools; Climate diplomas for the participating classes Climate detectives 8th – 11th grade: heating demand of the classrooms; energy performance certificates for the respective classrooms; climate diplomas for the participating classes
